Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is considering the creation of a National Security Council following his meeting on Monday with Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis at the Maximos Mansion.
The initiative comes as no surprise given the heightening tensions in the Aegean with Turkey on multiple fronts and the complications with Cyprus over gas and oil explorations, which Erdogan is keen to exploit.
According to sources, the Greek PM will be taking the proposal to the Parliament's president to introduce the issue for discussion by the relevant permanent committee of foreign affairs and defence.
The same sources suggest that Alexis Tsipras is interested also in upgrading the foreign ministry's National Council of Foreign Policy into one of Foreign Policy and Security.
Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis proposed setting up an inter-party council. The Prime Minister said that it's extremely important to create institutions that will contribute to creating a climate of collaboration between parties on foreign affairs issues, and the Potami leader's proposal could serve as a foundation for such discussion.
Following his meeting with the Prime Minister, Theodorakis said that political differences with the government did not indicate Potami was joining the ruling coalition, nor did it rule out collaboration of Greek parties on issues of national importance.
"We have a different opinion on how to rule the country and clash with the SYRIZA-ANEL coalition almost daily," Theodorakis said, but "we feel it is our patriotic obligation to discriminate between things. Domestic issues are one thing, great patriotic issues another."
