Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made new provocative statements, referring to the destruction of Smyrna.
ANT1 correspondant in Turkey, Maria Zacharakis, says Erdogan made these remarks at the Chamber of Commerce of Smyrna, while referring to the city's past and namely the destruction of Smyrna, accusing Greeks of burning the city.
In particular, Erdogan said the biggest blow to Smyrna was from Greek soldiers who burned the city as they "retreated."
"Do not look at what the Turks did. The biggest blows have been made by those who consider themselves to be civilised in this geographical area," he said.
The Great fire of Smyrna destroyed much of the port city in September 1922, when Turkey began their forceful control of Smyrni, and sadly claimed the lives of over 100,000 Greeks and Armenians.
