Tsipras to meet Erdogan at Nato Summit on Thursday

By 6 years ago

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Brussels, at 2:30pm on Thursday, Tsipras' office confirmed on Tuesday.

Tsipras and Erdogan will attend the NATO allies' meeting in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday. The agenda will include strengthening NATO's deterrence and defence, stepping up in the fight against terrorism, and achievings fairer burden-sharing.

The possibility of the two leaders' meeting had been discussed during a telephone conversation they held after Turkey's recent elections.

Earlier in the day, at Tuesday's press briefing, government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos noted that the issue of the two Greek army officers held in Turkey would top Tsipras's agenda at NATO.

"The prime minister will raise the issue at the NATO Summit and at all his meetings and formal interventions, in order to increase pressure on Turkey to release our two soldiers," Tzanakopoulos said.
