Greece's women’s water polo team have won silver after being defeated by Netherlands  4:6 in the finals.

In a time of national hardship, Greece’s female water polo team provided the country with something to cheer about at the European Championship, reaching the final with some wonderful performances in the competition. The Ethniki Omada beat hosts Spain 11:9 in a memorable semi-final, but in the showpiece match, they were found wanting.

During a tight first half, the Greeks were on the back foot, trailing 3:4 after the opening two periods. As the game progressed, defenses continued to be on top, but it was the Netherlands who proved to be the stronger as they claimed a hard-fought 6:4 win. Christina Chrysoula Tsoukala and Nikoleta Eleftheriadou both scored two goals for Greece.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Nevertheless, the team can be proud of a fantastic tournament and a well-earned silver medal, especially given that Greece hadn’t competed in the Women’s European Championship final since 2012.
