Zakynthos landslide injures beachgoers

By 6 years ago

A landslide over the iconic Navagio beach on Zakynthos island has reportedly injured three people.

According to authorities, the three victims are being transferred to Zakynthos General Hospital, while an emergency team from the local Fire Brigade (EMAK) are searching under fallen rocks for other possible victims.

Witnesses on the beach said there were three boats with passengers in the area during the landslide. "We heard a sound and a small part of the rock fell, then a second one, and finally a third and large piece dropped in the sea, creating turbulence that overturned the boats," a witness reported.

There were many tourists with children at the beach who were evacuated on boats.

Another Fire Brigade unit based in Elefsina, on the Attica coast, is on its way now to Zakynthos and another EMAK team of ten with a sniffer dog are also on their way to the island, to assist the local Fire Brigade and Coast Guard in searching for possible victims.
