Supreme Court launches investigation into Greece’s alleged mismanagement of migrant funds

By 6 years ago

The Supreme Court Public Prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou has ordered a preliminary investigation into media reports about the alleged mismanagement of funds given to Greece to cope with the migration crisis.

Dimitriou has instructed the head of the country's financial prosecutors Marianna Psaroudaki to investigate whether there is any truth to the allegations and whether there are grounds for the state to prosecute.

According to reports, Psaroudaki has already summoned witnesses to testify, including the head of the migration policy ministry's reception and identification service, Lieutenant General Andreas Iliopoulos.

An interview given by Iliopoulos was among the press articles that prompted the launch of the investigation, as he told Fileleftheros, that there were indications EU funds for migration were being mismanaged and called on prosecutors to intervene.

Iliopoulos, who was responsible for reception centres on Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Leros and Kos, was dismissed last week.

During his interview, Iliopoulos said that the funds were mismanaged both by state officials and by non-government organisations.
