Australia's new Western Melbourne Group confirmed the signing of Greek international Panagiotis Kone as the marquee player ahead of their first A-League season.

The 31-year-old is heading Down Under and will join the A-League newcomers on a two-year deal after ending his contract with Greek Super League team AEK Athens.

Kone is Western Melbourne's first official player signing, which comes only seven weeks since the club was granted an A-League license.

The 31-year-old midfielder has captained Italian club Bologna and also starred in the Greek national side at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where they qualified for the knockout stages.

“I am looking forward to playing a big part for Western Melbourne on and off the field,” said Kone.

“I am excited to meet my new teammates but also the great Greek community in Melbourne,” he added.

Western Melbourne is expected to send a strength and fitness coach to Greece later this month to help Kone's preparation before he joins the club's official pre-season program in June.
