Easter riots in Chania jail

By 5 years ago

Prisoners at Chania penitentiary in Agia, on the island of Crete, rioted on Easter Sunday and refused to return to their cells.

The reasons behind the uprising are still unclear with some sources suggesting the prisoners were earlier protesting the quality of the food.

The rebellion was confined to one sub-section of a wing in the prison while the prisoners, though not in their cells, had not entered the courtyard.

The public prosecutor on duty had gone to the prison in a bid to persuade the inmates to return to their cells. So far there is no involvement of prisoners from other prison wings nor has any damage to the prison been reported.
