Greece’s National Council on Foreign Policy concluded their meeting on Wednesday "in a spirit of national reconciliation," after discussing Turkish provocations in Cyprus' EEZ, said Greek Foreign Affairs Minister Giorgos Katrougalos.
According to the statement released by Foreign Affairs Minister Giorgos Katrougalos, representatives of all parties but the Communist Party and Golden Dawn were briefed on the recent EU decision for "targeted measures" against Turkey if it continues its illegal actions inside Cyprus' EEZ.
The Minister referred to the actions which Greek diplomacy has undertaken in recent months in cooperation with Cyprus and in defence of national interests both at European Union and United Nations level, as well as bilaterally with the US and regional countries.
Katrougalos said that the results of these concerted moves, besides the recent EU decision to discuss measures against Turkey, is that the issue was included in the US-Turkish agenda, something that had not happened in the past or in times of crisis.
Greece's EU partners have understood that this is not just a bilateral dispute, but an issue concerning the entire European Union, as the Turkish actions challenge both the sovereign rights of an EU member-state like the Republic of Cyprus, but also hamper European energy policies and European companies, the Greek Foreign Minister said.
He stressed that the border of each member state is also a European border and the EEZ of Cyprus is an EU Exclusive Economic Zone.
