Greece’s former Prime Minister and Leader of the former PASOK party, George Papandreou will be one of the invited speakers at this year’s Athens Democracy Forum to be held on October 9-11.
Other notable guests invited to speak include the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk who will visit Athens on Wednesday and Thursday.
Tusk is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at 15:00, before addressing the Forum at 18:10 and meet with Athens Mayor Costas Bakoyannis at 19:40.
The European Council President will participate in the Forum on Thursday again and at 20:45 he will attend a ceremony in which the City of Athens Democracy Award will be posthumously awarded to Pawel Adamowicz, the assassinated mayor of Gdansk, Poland.
The Athens Democracy Forum, in its sixth year, is held by the Democracy and Culture Foundation in collaboration with the 'New York Times', the United Nations Democracy Fund, the City of Athens and 'Kathimerini' newspaper.
The Forum brings senior New York Times journalists together with international business leaders, policy makers, academics and experts to discuss the state of democracy and what action it requires in the face of mounting challenges.
The Athens Democracy Forum is staged among the Greek capital's historic landmarks, such as the Zappeion Megaron, the Stoa of Attalos, the Acropolis Museum and the Old Parliament House.
