Two men shot dead at a popular family tavern in Athens

By 4 years ago

As dozens of families ate dinner at the famous Voskopoula Tavern at Vari in Athens on Sunday evening, four gunmen stormed in and killed two people in what has been described as a "mafia-style hit", leaving children and parents traumatised.

At around 7 pm on Sunday evening, four gunmen, covering their faces, ran into the very busy tavern and opened fire on a group of foreigners, killing two men and wounding a woman.

According to reports, the incident happened in front of the families of the victims, who "froze" as soon as they saw people wearing hoods approach the table. The killers acted so quickly, the victims were not able to react. From the close-range gunshots of the perpetrators, a Slovenian and a Montenegrin were instantly killed.

Police and ambulances quickly arrived at the scene and pronounced the two men dead, while the woman was hospitalised with leg injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the four perpetrators fled in a jeep, which is being sought by authorities.

Police are investigating whether it was a contract killing and what led to the murders.
