Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a social media comment on Tuesday, urged victims of domestic violence to call help line, SOS 15900 and report any incidents to authorities.

"Staying home doesn't mean we suffer violence. If you are victimized at home, call SOS 15900 or, in case of emergencies, 100," said the Prime Minister on Twitter. "If you can't talk, send an email at sos15900@isotita.gr," he added.

The Prime Minister’s intervention comes after a noticeable increase in domestic violence around the world as a result of the lockdown restrictions imposed by governments on their citizens.

In France, for example there has been a dramatic increase in domestic violence, with the Secretary of State for Gender Equality, Marlène Schiappa announcing an increase of “32% in one week”, whilst in Paris it rose by as much as 36%.
