The works in Athens for the "Great Walk" continue.
The “Great Walk of Athens”, is one of the largest urban initiatives ever held in the capital which aims to encourage on-foot exploration by citizens and tourists.
After Vasilissis Olgas Avenue and Panepistimiou Street, where everyday more and more residents and visitors of Athens use the widened pedestrian streets and bicycle paths, the Great Walk of the City is now being implemented at Syntagma Square.
Works on the bottom side of the square began on Saturday. According to Athens mayor Kostas Bakoyiannis, "the square acquires more free public space and the whole area around it becomes more friendly to the residents and visitors of the city. It becomes part of the city we want to walk."
It is recalled two weeks ago, President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou and the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyiannis discussed “The Great Walk Of Athens”.
Sakellaropoulou expressed hope that the works will help make everyday life better for Athens residents and visitors, underlining that the city’s historic centre must again become a pole of attraction and regain the vibrancy it deserves.
The president also noted that the efforts to restore the historic building that housed the Attiko cinema must be speeded up, in order to close what has, for years, been an “open wound” in the heart of Athens.
