A Greek Orthodox Priest that was shot in the French city of Lyon days ago is "doing well", a family contact told Greek City Times.

Father Nikolaos Kakavelaki was shot by a still unknown assailant on Saturday.

The priest was preparing to return to Greece after finishing his placement at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Lyon, but was shot twice in the stomach and in a critical condition.

Yesterday, fake news spread that Father Kakavelaki had died despite being scheduled for surgery on Monday morning local time.

A contact close to the family told Greek City Times that Father Kakavelaki "is out surgery and is doing well."

There are still no reports who the shooter was.

One suspect, originally misidentified as a former Greek Orthodox monk, was released from custody and taken to a psychiatric clinic after investigations.
