After a three year delay because of the civil war, Greek firm METKA will build a gas-powered electricity plant in Tobruk.

The Mayor of Tobruk Municipality, Faraj Boual Khattabia, and the General Director of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), Ibrahim Al-Falah, held a meeting on Saturday with METKA’s CEO, Kostas Horinos, to finalize the agreement for the power plant with a production capacity of 740 megawatts.

The Libyan side has agreed to hand over the site to the Greek company through the Municipal Projects and Urban Planning Office and the General Electricity Company, Libya Review reported.

“METKA will start supplying equipment and installations very soon. The first unit will be operated after 6 months,” the statement said.

The project is expected to be completed within 15 months, with a financial value of 550 million Libyan dinars (LYD), or about 340 million euros.

"METKA is the Sustainable Engineering Solutions business unit of MYTILINEOS S.A. undertaking the development and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, as well as the construction of thermal power plants and selected infrastructure projects," Libya Review wrote.

Libya has been in a state of constant warfare since NATO and Muslim Brotherhood elements removed long-time ruler Muammar Qaddafi.

Emerging in the vacuum is a Muslim Brotherhood government in Western Libya with support from Turkey, while moderate forces are based in Eastern Libya.

In November last year, the Muslim Brotherhood government signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkey in the attempt to steal Greek maritime space in the Eastern Mediterranean.
