Stefanos Tsitsipas advances to second round at Mexican Open

By 3 years ago

Stefanos Tsitsipas made his debut at the Mexican Open in Acapulco, defeating Benoit Paire.

Greece's tennis star proved too good for Paire 6-3 6-1 in just sixty-nine minutes.

“I felt very responsible and very truthful to the way I was playing and the way I was fighting so that was really nice to see. The crowd brought all the energy, they backed me up, they supported me throughout the entire match," the 22-year-old said.

He will now face American John Robert Isner.

Tsitsipas first visited Mexico towards the end of 2014 for back-to-back junior tournaments.

“That was my first elevation in tennis. Mexico is pretty much the place where it all started for me, chasing the dream,” he said in his post-tournament interview.

“I feel like Mexicans share a lot of common things with Greeks and I can see that from people and the food and the culture. There are many similarities and I really like Mexican people. They treat me really well and they’re very hard-working and humble and very ethical in many ways.”
