As reported by the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection, Greece immediately responded to the request from the Indian authorities.
Through the European Civil Protection Mechanism, Greece is "ready to send 90 oxygen cylinders with a total capacity of 440 liters, as well as medical supplies (masks, gloves and other means of self-protection)."
The Indian health system is on the verge of collapse and there is a huge shortage of sanitary material for the treatment of COVID-19.
In especially short supply are oxygen cylinders.
In fact, the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias speaks of a self-evident response by Greece "to the call of each country for assistance".
"In this battle that the world community is fighting against the pandemic, our country is present wherever and whenever it is needed," he said.
Hardalias added that he hopes "from the bottom of his heart that Greece's contribution will offer relief to the tested India."
With more than 300,000 new cases confirmed daily over the last week, the second wave of COVID-19 in India has been devastating.
India – now the pandemic’s epicentre – set a global record on Thursday with 375,000 cases.
The crisis emerged swiftly in recent weeks even after India’s health minister said last month that the country was in the “end game” of its battle with the disease.
