No.17 seed Maria Sakkari dispatches Zavatska 6-4, 6-1 to book her spot in Round 2

Maria Sakkari overcomes a scratchy start to defeat qualifier Katarina Zavatska, 6-4, 6-1 in round 1 of Roland Garros.

The 21-year-old Ukrainian, No. 129 in the world made it to the main board through qualifiers, took advantage of the Greek tennis player's mistakes early in the first set and managed to make two breaks, to which Sakkari replied to immediately.

The experience of Greek champion prevailed in the end, where she managed to win the first set 6-4.

Sakkari raised her performance and dominated and easily won the second set 6-1.

Sakkari's opponent in the second round will be the Italian Jasmine Paolini, who at the same time prevailed 7-5, 6-1 over the Swiss Stephanie Voggele. The 25-year-old Paolini is ranked No. 91 in the world rankings shouldn't be a concern for the Greek tennis player, who is ranked No. 17 on the tournament.
