Magnitude 6.1 earthquake strikes Crete, Greece- EMSC

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck Crete, Greece, on Wednesday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The earthquake was particularly felt by the inhabitants of the island while according to the first automatic indication of the geodynamic institute the focal depth is very large.

According to the Geodynamic Institute, the quake occurred at 7.09 in the morning and had a magnitude of 5.6.

Its epicentre was at sea, specifically 34 kilometres west, southwest of Arvi, while its focal depth was estimated at 43 kilometres.

According to testimonies from Crete, the earthquake was intense and lasted several seconds.

The earthquake was also felt on the coasts of Greece, Turkey and Egypt.
