AEK's match with Dinamo Zagreb for the Champions League qualifiers has been postponed after the fans of the Croatian team and their friends from Panathinaikos murdered a fan of the "yellow and black" in Nea Philadelphia, Athens.
At the meeting on security measures scheduled on Tuesday morning, the AEK side stated that it considers Dinamo Zagreb and the Greek Police jointly responsible for what happened last night. Club representatives left the meeting as they thought it "embarrassing to participate", as they stated.
A Greek man died Monday night after being beaten by fans of Dinamo Zagreb and Panathinaikos outside of the OPAP Arena in the Nea Philadelphia neighbourhood ahead of the UEFA Champions League third-qualifying-round match scheduled for Tuesday.
Four Greeks and four Croatians were also treated for various injuries, while police made 96 arrests.
According to reports, a big group of around 150-200 Dinamo supporters descended on Athens by road on Monday night, defying a ban imposed on visitors from Croatia over fears of precisely the kind of clashes that took place.
Police put the motorcade under discreet surveillance but lost track of the Croatian fans when they left the touring buses they arrived on and made their way to AEK’s OPAP Arena by car and train.
There, they reportedly clashed with home team supporters who had been hanging out at the cafes and bars around the stadium, where AEK and Dinamo had held a practice earlier.
According to reports, the Dinamo fans were also joined by several supporters of Athens’ Panathinaikos club.
