Steki Taverna, one of Sydney's beloved late-night restaurants, is preparing to reopen its doors in mid-October. The announcement by owner Paul Ioakimidis comes a year after the closure of the original Steki Taverna in Newtown, a popular Greek-Australian establishment known for its Greek charm, live music, and dancing until the early hours of the morning.

The closure of Steki Taverna was prompted by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. Despite the challenges, the overwhelming support from the community convinced Ioakimidis to find a new location for the taverna. He received an outpouring of love and encouragement, making him realize that the Sydney community would greatly miss the unique experience that Steki Taverna offered.

The new venue in Enmore, located at 149 Enmore Road, will provide a larger capacity for 90 diners. The interior design will retain the same Greek aesthetics and memorabilia that made the original Steki Taverna so beloved. Tables will be arranged around a dance floor, with space available for a live band to entertain guests.

Head chef Stratos Loupos will be returning to the kitchen, along with chef Filipas Triandafilidis from ex-Kafenes, to serve a slightly updated menu of traditional Greek dishes. Favorites such as fried halloumi and souvlaki will be available, and the signature dish of a full quarter lamb roasted for up to six hours with a blend of spices will also make a comeback.

While the opening date for Steki Taverna is yet to be determined, renovations are currently underway, and there is already high demand, with the first Friday and Saturday night fully booked. The goal is to recreate the vibrant and authentic Greek atmosphere that made Steki Taverna a cherished institution in Sydney. Ioakimidis is enthusiastic about bringing Steki back to the people and encourages everyone to dance and get involved in the lively experience.
