Vassilis Spanoulis appointed as the new coach of the Greek National Team

Vassilis Spanoulis is the new coach of the Greek National Team for the next two years. The Greek coach of Peristeri was officially announced by the Hellenic Basketball Federation.

In detail, the announcement states:

"A member of a generation of athletes who combined their presence with great successes in Greek basketball, takes over the technical guidance of the Men's National Team today. Vassilis Spanoulis has agreed on everything with the president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation, Evaggelos Liolios, on behalf of the administration, and both sides will move forward together for the next two years.

The challenges on the calendar for the National Team during this period are the Pre-Olympic Tournament in July 2024 with the aim of qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris, and the qualification phase of EuroBasket 2025, which starts earlier, with the aim of qualifying for the final phase of the tournament.

The official presentation of Vassilis Spanoulis will take place tomorrow, Tuesday (3/10), at 14:00 in the boardroom of the Hellenic Basketball Federation.

BIOGRAPHY

Vassilis Spanoulis was born on 7/8/1982, took his first basketball steps at GS Lamia and Keravnos, and in 1999, at the age of 17, he began his professional career with the Larissa team.

In 2001, he went to Maroussi where he stayed until 2005, when he made his first transfer to Panathinaikos. A year later, he joined the Houston Rockets, but in 2007 he returned to the "greens" until 2010 when he transferred to Olympiacos. He stayed there for over ten years, completing a great sporting career on June 26, 2021.

He won a total of 3 EuroLeague titles, 7 championships, 4 Greek Cups, and one Intercontinental Cup.

In his sporting career, he played for the Men's National Team 146 times, scoring 1494 points, being a member of the team that won the gold medal in EuroBasket 2005, silver in the 2006 FIBA World Championship, and bronze in EuroBasket 2009.

He also had 25 appearances with the Men's National Under-21 Team, with which he won the gold medal at the 2002 European Championship, 31 appearances with the Men's National Under-18 Team, with which he reached third place at the 2000 European Championship, and he also won the silver medal at the Mediterranean Games in 2001.

In the 2022-23 season, he started his coaching career with Peristeri, where he continues. In his first year, he led his team to the final of the Men's Cup and the 3rd place in the Basket League."
