The permanent population of the country on January 1st of this year is estimated to be 10,413,982 people (5,090,591 men and 5,323,391 women), reduced by 0.5% compared to the corresponding population on January 1, 2022, which was 10,461,627 people.

This is according to the research conducted by ELSTAT on the estimated permanent population of the country (based on the annual data of Population Movement in 2022) and the estimates of annual migration flows in 2022 (inbound and outbound migration).

The 0.5% decrease in the permanent population is a result of the natural population decrease which amounted to 64,000 people (75,921 births versus 139,921 deaths of residents within Greek territory) and the net migration estimated at 16,355 people (positive balance).

The population aged 0-14 years accounted for 13.4% of the total population, compared to 63.7% for the population aged 15-64 years and 22.9% for the population aged 65 years and above. The aging index (population aged 65 years and above to population aged 0-14 years) reached 171.8.

Net migration is estimated at 16,355 people, which corresponds to the difference between 96,662 inbound and 80,307 outbound migrants. In 2021, net migration was estimated at -22,476 people (57,120 inbound and 79,596 outbound migrants). It should be noted that the data on inbound migration includes individuals who were in the country on 1/1/2023 in search of international or temporary protection.
