2023 was a record year for clean energy in Greece

By 4 months ago

A historic high was recorded in 2023 by the production of clean electricity in Greece, as 57% of the energy mix was covered by Renewable Energy Sources (air - solar) and by hydroelectric units, exceeding 25 TWh. In 2022, the corresponding percentage was 50.12%.

In particular, with regard to Renewable Energy Sources (RES), their development has been leaps and bounds in recent years in our country.

In 2023, annual green energy production hit a decade high. Reaching 21.35 TWh, it was increased by 147% compared to the annual electricity generation from RES in 2014 (8.64 TWh). In fact, in August 2023, the largest monthly production from RES in the history of the electricity system (2.25 TWh) took place.

Also, it is worth pointing out that - for the first time - RES production moved throughout the year above 1.5 TWh per month.

In terms of demand, over the last decade, the coverage of total demand from RES generation has increased by 151%, reaching over 43% in 2023, the highest recorded so far.

At the same time, last year, the participation of lignite in the domestic energy mix shrank further, reaching a historic low of 10.1%. This decrease reflects the significant progress of the country's ligniteization program - given that in 2014, energy production from lignite exceeded 54% - and the continuous upward trend of environmentally friendly forms of energy.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr Thodoros Skylakakis, pointed out: "The further penetration of Renewable Energy Sources into our energy potential is the government's strategic choice. This is because we believe that they will contribute drastically to the green transition, to better electricity prices, and to our country's energy security. The initiatives we are taking for this purpose are bearing fruit, and this is reflected in the recent, extremely encouraging data announced by ADMIE, from which it appears that in the last decade, energy production has increased by 147% from RES, while at the same time 2023 was a record year for the production of clean electricity in Greece."

The President and CEO of ADMIE, Mr. Manos Manousakis, stated: "ADMIE has been contributing to the rapid development of green energy in recent years by granting timely connection conditions and connecting at the fastest possible rate the new RES stations that are being built. Through its ten-year investment plan, amounting to €5 billion, the Operator is continuously developing the electricity system, increasing the electricity space from 18 GW today to 29 GW in 2030, which will allow the introduction of even more RES units. At the same time, the international interconnections it promotes ADMIE will allow Greece to become a strong exporter of energy from Renewable Sources."
