An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 shook southern Greece on Friday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) located the epicentre 56 kilometres southwest of Pyrgos at approximately 9:12 am local time.

While initial reports haven't indicated any injuries or damage, the tremors were felt as far away as the capital, Athens, and the southern island of Crete.

Greece, situated in a highly seismic zone, experiences frequent earthquakes. Fortunately, most cause minimal to no damage and casualties.

Authorities are currently assessing the potential tsunami risk along the Greek coastline.

No casualties have been reported so far.
