Yorgos Lanthimos' Sci-Fi Comedy 'Bugonia' Snapped Up by Focus Features, Starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons

Despite his latest film, "Kinds of Kindness," just premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, Yorgos Lanthimos is already moving forward with his next project, the sci-fi comedy "Bugonia." Focus Features and Universal have acquired the rights to the film, which will reunite Lanthimos with his "Kinds of Kindness" stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

"Bugonia" is an English-language remake of Joon-Hwan Jang's 2003 South Korean film "Save the Green Planet." The original follows a conspiracy theorist who abducts several high-ranking officials, convinced that they are reptilian aliens plotting to destroy Earth.

Lanthimos' version, written by Will Tracy, is expected to follow a similar plot, but with two kidnappers targeting a female CEO. While the specific roles of Plemons and Stone have not been confirmed, it is speculated that Plemons may play one of the conspiracy theorists, while Stone could portray the CEO.

"Yorgos Lanthimos is a cinematic visionary with a unique style," said Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski. "We are excited to partner with him, Emma, and the teams at Element, Square Peg, and CJ ENM to bring this darkly funny story to life."
