Princess Kako of Japan embarked on a cultural journey to Greece, marking her arrival with a visit to the iconic Parthenon, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
On May 26, the Japanese princess explored the historic temple, elegantly attired in attire adorned with the colours of the Greek flag.
Dating back to the fifth century BC, the Parthenon graces the Athenian Acropolis with its imposing stone pillars, reaching heights exceeding 10 meters. It symbolizes the pinnacle of ancient Greek civilization.
The temple has been undergoing restoration efforts since the 19th century, and its meticulous upkeep fascinated Princess Kako. Inquiring about the numbered stones used in the repairs, she showed keen interest in the ongoing preservation endeavours.
Officials noted the princess's evident admiration upon learning of the continual discoveries unearthed through each restoration project, reflecting her deep appreciation for the rich heritage embodied by the Parthenon.
At 12 noon, Princess Kako will be welcomed at the National Gallery by the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexandra Papadopoulou for the celebration of the Greece-Japan Year of Culture and Tourism.
It is recalled that the declaration of 2024 as the Greece-Japan Year of Culture and Tourism was agreed upon by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida in January 2023 during the official visit of the Greek Prime Minister to Japan.
