Archbishop Anastasios of Albania is set to arrive in Athens within hours for medical treatment, following a deterioration in his health.

The transfer is being facilitated by the Hellenic Air Force, which has deployed a C-27J aircraft at the request of Greece’s National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB).

The 94-year-old Archbishop had been battling a seasonal virus and was hospitalised in Tirana just before the New Year. Updates on his condition were shared via a post on his personal Facebook account, with the Archdiocese initially assuring the public that his health was stable and that his doctors were optimistic.

However, his condition has since worsened, prompting the decision to transfer him to Athens for further care. Authorities have confirmed that the process of securing diplomatic permits for the airlift is underway, ensuring the swift completion of his relocation to the Greek capital.

Known for his decades-long service in Albania, he has been a unifying spiritual figure and a symbol of reconciliation in the region.

Further updates on his condition are expected once he arrives in Athens and begins receiving treatment at a specialised medical facility.
