The Greek National Opera is set to stage La Forza del Destino for the first time in 27 years, with a new production directed by Rodula Gaitanou.
Gaitanou's interpretation of the iconic Verdi opera will be set in the early 20th century, incorporating elements from both World Wars to reflect the story's timeless themes.
"‘La Forza del Destino’ explores the concept of original sin, which shapes the actions of a dysfunctional family and defines their choices to the bitter end," said Gaitanou. "It’s a deep dive into psychological trauma, obsession, and revenge. Set against the backdrop of war, the characters’ hatred and desire for vengeance mirror the horrific consequences of conflict. The opera is about the quest for redemption and inner peace amidst external chaos and turmoil."
Paolo Carignani will conduct a stellar cast that includes Cellia Costea, Dimitri Platanias, Marcelo Puente, Petro Magoulas, and Oksana Volkova.
The production opens on January 26 and runs through February 18, 2025.
