Greece’s Maria Sakkari, 21-year- old from Athens has beaten former 11 seed Alize Cornet from France in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 and has made it to the next round of the Australian Open.
Maria was cheered on by her large group of fans and played exceptionally well in an over two and a half hour match, making it through to the 3rd round of the Australian Open. She has become the first Greek tennis player to rank in the top “32” best female players in a grand slam tournament for over 12 years.
The 1.72 m tall athlete made her debut for the Greece Federation Cup Team in 2012, and achieved her career high singles ranking of 89 on 31 October, 2016. Her mother Angeliki Kanellopoulou also played on the pro tour.
