In a world first, Evzones stand guard at the Epitaphio in Adelaide

By 5 years ago

In what was a world first the Hellenic Presidential Guard who are in South Australia for an official visit from Athens, stood guard in full ceremonial uniform at the Greek Orthodox Good Friday service held in Adelaide.

The Evzones attended the afternoon and evening service of Holy Friday at St George Church in Thebarton and the Presidential Guard stood guard the entire time next to the Epitaph as hundreds of parishioners watched on.

It was the first time in history that the Hellenic President has given permission for Evzones to participate in full uniform at a Holy Friday service and to guard the Epitaph, allowing the Evzones to commemorate Jesus’ death by crucifixion.

In the evening, the Evzones took part in the procession of the Epitaph as the Presidential Guard escorted the Epitaph along the streets of Thebarton, along with thousands of local Greek parishioners.

They will also be taking part in midnight mass tonight at St George Church in Thebarton, The Nativity of Christ at Port Adelaide and Prophet Elias in Norwood.

The Evzones will also be attending St George Church service on Monday to commemorate Agios Giorgos Feast Day and they will be at Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Church in Athelstone on Tuesday before their official visit to Adelaide ends and depart for Greece on Wednesday.
