Greece’s women’s national water polo team started the European Championships in an impressive way, defeating Serbia 26-7.
The Greeks came into the match as heavy favorites, and led 9-1 after the first period of play. Greece then extended their lead to 14-4 by halftime. After the third period, Greece found themselves up 19-6. A strong fourth period finish from Greece gave them a 26-7 win over Serbia.
Maria Myriokefalitaki led Greece with six goals, as the 19-year-old had a successful debut for her national team in a major tournament. Following Myriokefalitaki were Eleftheria Plevritou (five goals), Eleni Xenaki (four goals), and Alkisti Avramidou (three goals).
Tomorrow, Greece will face Croatia. Croatia fell in their opener against host Hungary, 25-6. The two sides faced each other at the last European Championships in 2018, with Greece prevailing 21-2 over the Croats.
