Melbourne father Paul Browitt has died in hospital, a month after him and his family were caught in the White Island volcano eruption on New Zealand's North Island which also claimed his daughter's life, Greek Australian Krystal Eve Browitt.

He was being treated in Melbourne at The Alfred Hospital alongside his 23-year-old daughter Stephanie, who remains in hospital after they were airlifted back to Australia.

Paul's younger daughter Krystal, had turned 21 shortly before the family went on the Ovation of the Seas cruise ship, and was the first victim identified to have been killed in the tragedy.

Paul and his daughters decided to visit White Island, while their mother, Marie (Drakatou), chose to stay on the ship.

NZ Deputy Police Commissioner, John Tims on Monday confirmed that the official death toll had risen to 18 after "a further person died in an Australian hospital" on Sunday night as a result of injuries suffered in the eruption.

The GoFundMe page for the Browitt family has raised over $76,000.
