More lockdowns possible as covid cases continue to riseMore lockdowns possible as covid cases continue to rise

As new coronavirus case numbers reach four digits, there are talks that at least two more parts of Greece will go into a full lockdown.

As of February 11, Attica entered a two-week hard lockdown.

The tough and sudden measures in Athens were enforced to try to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

“I will not hide: In the next two months, restrictions may be imposed and lifted depending on the level of alarm,” Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis said, adding “this is also the last mile towards freedom.”

Greece recorded 1,327 new cases of COVID-19 in the latest 24-hour reporting period including:

  • 676 in Athens
  • 129 in Thessaloniki
  • 94 in Achaia

The committee of health experts advising the government will meet on Friday to discuss whether to recommend further measures in Thessaloniki, Achaia and Rethymno in Crete.

Thessaloniki Mayor Konstantinos Zervas has also urged the government to at least close schools, citing EODY data that showed that 8.5-11% of new cases in recent days concern children under the age of 12.
