The President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou visited Nea Epidavros on Sunday, to attend the events for the celebration of the 199th anniversary of the National Assembly of the Greeks and the Independence of Greece.
“We are here today to honour a leading event of the Greek Revolution and the political formation of our Nation. The First National Assembly of Epidaurus drafted and voted, in January 1822, the Declaration of Independence and the ‘Provisional State of Greece’, which is the first Constitution of our country,” she said.
Sakellaropoulou also underlined that “the National Assembly of the Greeks is a great legacy for all of us. It reminds us of what continues and unites us.”
“Returning on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, to the birthplaces of our modern history, we highlight the fundamental values of our social and political coexistence.”
The Greek President attended the Doxology at the Holy Church of Evangelistria and the memorial service that was held at the central square in New Epidaurus, where she laid a wreath on the commemorative stelae of the First National Assembly.
