Hundreds of young people defied coronavirus restrictions, gathering around Patras Fortress on Sunday evening to celebrate ‘Apokries’ (carnival celebrations).

Apokries is a time to celebrate before the reverent period of lent commences (this year: Monday 15 March).

Coronavirus cases in Patras have been rising steadily in recent weeks.

Despite this, young residents of the city took to the streets playing the drums, dancing and lighting off firecrackers.

Images and videos captured by thebest.gr are reminiscent of pre-covid carnivale days.

The very famous Carnivale of Patras, the largest Apokries carnival in Greece, was cancelled this year due to the pandemic. It combines circus and mask elements with public street parties. Floats, giant decorated cars, carts and coaches, and colourful paper mache figures are watched by crowds on the streets and from the balconies of apartments. The closing ceremony at Patras Harbour features the burning of the Carnival King (Vasilias Karnavalos) and a huge fireworks display.
