Centuries-old traditions of friendship, spiritual and cultural closeness links Greece and Russia, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
"Greek-Russian relations are based on long traditions of friendship, spiritual and cultural closeness," the foreign minister said.
"Our country has always been active, for reasons of principle, in support of the Greek people and their national liberation struggle for independence," Lavrov continued.
"Russian and Greek fighters fought side by side in the most difficult conditions, in the name of triumph for indestructible values of truth and justice," he stressed.
Lavrov then explained that many Greeks had worked in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"The most brilliant example is Ioannis Kapodistrias, whose role and position in the history of the two states is insurmountable," the foreign minister added.
