Playing his first match outside Australia since early 2020, Nick Kyrgios beat 21st seed Ugo Humbert in a 5-set epic in the first round of Wimbledon 2021.
Greek Australian superstar Nick Kyrgios stormed past Halle Champion Ugo Humbert in the first round of Wimbledon 2021 in a 5-set epic. Humbert was in the the form of his life having beaten some top names at Halle but Kyrgios, who was playing his first match in five months served his way out of the match in five sets 6-4,4-6,3-6,6-1,9-7 in 3 hrs and 26 mins over the two days.
In the opening game of the fourth set, Nick Kyrgios pummeled 4 electrifying first serves to take the game in just 43 seconds. 3 out of 4 were aces while Humbert managed to get the racquet in between the fourth. This quick service game sent the crowd wild and set up a perfect tone for Kyrgios to win the fourth set.
After the match, Kyrgios spoke about how he isn’t afraid of anyone in the draw and believes he could beat anyone. The Australian will be facing Gianluca Mager in the second round on Thursday.
“I’m not scared of anyone in the draw. I know and if I believe and I’m feeling good mentally, I know what I am capable of. 3-4 days a week, doesn’t matter for me. A week’s preparation is not gonna change much. I’m playing this sport since I was 7-years old. I am gonna go out there and give it. I am serve big and play big and I just compete.” said Kyrgios about his preparations.
