Australian State exceeds 100 daily coronavirus cases of the Delta strain

The Australian State of NSW has recorded 112 new Covid-19 cases of the Delta strain, with the Premier announcing a change to AstraZeneca vaccine rules for those aged over 40.

According  to NSW Health the state  recorded  112 new locally acquired cases of #COVID19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night.

Of the 112, at least  34 of those were infectious are in the community and 12 of people who had been only partially isolating.

Of the 112 cases on Monday, 64 are linked to a known case or cluster – 41 are household contacts and 23 are close contacts while 48 cases have an unknown source and are under investigation.

It comes as the state government announced the AstraZeneca vaccine will now be available to over 40s at NSW Health vaccination centres.

“A large part of it is dependent on all of us doing the right thing and being extra cautious,” Ms Berejiklian said, adding this was “not the time to cut any corners”.

The Premier repeated her previous statement that the number of cases in the community will need to be close to zero before restrictions can be eased.

“We won’t know the answer as to how long the lockdown will take at this stage because we need to collect the data as to how we can get that number down,” the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian stated.

NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant has asked people in the Fairfield, Liverpool and Canterbury-Bankstown local government areas, in south-west Sydney, who have received one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine to try to bring forward their second dose.

“If you have had the AstraZeneca vaccine within the last four weeks, we are asking that you ring your GP and they may be able to bring forward your booking to that six- to eight-week period,” she said.

The COVID-19 lockdown has been extended due to the fast spread of the virus due to the Delta variation.
