Theophilos is considered one of the leading figures of the Greek folk art.

🔸Born in Lesvos in 1870 in a poor family, the self – taught painter moved in 1897 to Volos and then Pelion where he spent most of his life painting an important part of his frescoes that some of them you can admire even to date.

🔸When he returned to Lesvos in 1912, he met the internationally acclaimed art critic and publisher Teriade, who presented Theophilos’ work to the international art circles.

🔸 Theophilos' inspiration derives from the history of Greece, therefore the figures of Alexander the Great, Konstantinos Palaeologos and the heroes of the 1821 Greek War of Independence are the protagonists of his paintings.

🔸His art has been praised for its spontaneous, unpretentious style, the realistic expression, the warm natural colors (usually made by himself), namely all those components that determine authentic folk art.

🔸If you happen to be in Athens till February 3rd don’t miss the exhibition “Theofilos: The Evzone of Painting”, curated by Takis Mavrotas as, at Thfgr More info here
