LAVRIO: A giant heart-shaped crater near Athens is the ultimate monument to lovers (VIDEO)

In the heart of the municipality of Lavreotiki is a huge heart-shaped crater.

Although many would rush to describe it as a natural monument of lovers, the legends surrounding its creation are actually not so romantic.

The widespread scientific view holds that it is the result of the the roof of a large cave collapsing in on itself.

However, the widespread "popular" view says that it was created by a meteorite fall in the 18th or 19th century.

Whatever the truth, the site is spectacular.

"Chaos" has a depth of 55 metres and its diameter reaches 120 metres.

Its interior is even more interesting, as it includes metals of various types and rare rocks.

One of them is galenite, a mineral that is 99% silver and 1% lead.

Besides, the wider area of ​​Lavrio, since antiquity was famous for its metallurgy.

In any case, Chaos is the ultimate monument of nature for lovers.

How to get to Chaos from Athens

First you have to get to Lavrio.

Starting from Athens, if you go by car, you enter the Attica road to Markopoulo.

At the end of it you continue on to Lavrio.

If you go by the coast, follow the path to Sounio-Lavrio road.

At the entrance of the city of Lavrio (coming from Lavrio Avenue) and on the beautiful stone bridge, turn immediately right and head to Agios Konstantinos for 4 km.

After entering the settlement, see to the left a sign that says Recreation Place Chaos Agia Triada, and head that way.

After 300 metres, you reach a football field.

Opposite the football field in the small forest, is the site, about 100 metres away.

As for the town of Lavrio, it is a popular destination for those who want something alternative and quiet.

Its friendly square, attentive cafes and restaurants usually fill up on Sundays when people want to get away from the everyday life of Athens and enjoy the seaside, even in the winter.

In the fish market of the town you will find fresh fish all season and because its close proximity to Athens, makes it an ideal destination for the leisure ride that you want.
