Sydney Honours 25 March Greek Independence Day (GALLERY)

Last week saw the conclusion of celebrations for the 201 year anniversary of the Greek War of Independence of the historic 25 March 1821, that saw Greece rise up against the Ottoman Turks and free itself from 400 years of bondage.

Where there are Greeks in the world and philhellenes, there were celebrations to mark the historic event which captures the hearts and minds of young and old and gives a much needed pause from the tragedies unfolding around us, to reflect on the past and from it learn that there is HOPE for the future.

In the antipodes, the occasion was celebrated in all capital cities.

In Sydney, the event took place at the Martin Place memorial, where dignitaries and the public attended to honour the fallen heroes of 1821.
