Among the famous people found these days in Mykonos is Ariana Rockefeller. The wealthy heiress, great-granddaughter of John D. Rockefeller, once the richest man in the world and founder of the Standard Oil company, was photographed in the island’s streets.

She was seen on the Cycladic island with a slip dress and a shoulder bag in the most impressive summer combination, blue and blinding yellow.

A few months ago, on the occasion of another visit to Greece and her participation as an honoured guest and muse in the haute couture show of the designer Vassilis Zoulias, “The Swans”, from the work of the same name by Truman Capote, she had said in an interview in Marie Claire.

“Greece is like a second home to me, even if I didn’t grow up there. I love the country, its culture and its people. As we say in America, your home is where your heart is. I know Athens and Mykonos quite well, while I have also visited Delphi, Tinos for the Feast of the Virgin Mary on the Fifteenth of August, Thessaloniki and Rhodes. I always look forward to visiting Greece and am eager to discover more elements of its culture and civilisation.”

David Rockefeller also maintained his family’s love for Greece and ancient Greek culture by visiting Mount Athos.

In 1929, the Rockefeller Foundation provided the capital to complete the Museum of Ancient Agora construction and scholarships to train archaeologists. In addition, it funded continuing excavations in the Agora throughout the 1930s.

During their meeting, Rockefeller gifted the Minister of Culture and Sports with a volume of her grandfather’s memoirs and a copy of the record of a donation from the Rockefeller Foundation in 1949.

This bequest gave $150,000 to the American School of Classical Studies to continue their work excavating the ancient Agora. The original document is found in the archives of the Rockefeller Foundation in New York.
