What Athens looks like at night - NASA's photo from space

By 5 months ago

Athens at night was captured by an astronaut with his camera from the International Space Station of NASA.

In this impressive photo, the country's capital is recorded from... very high, with the streets looking like illuminated rivers and the sprawling city stretching to the coast.

"Stark contrasts between light and dark indicate the interface between urban and natural areas in the Greek capital," the space agency commented.

In this photo, the lighting cuts off abruptly at the southern tip of Athens, where the city meets the Saronic Gulf. The city's northwestern edge also shows a sharp drop in illumination due to the Parnitha mountains.

Likewise, the lack of lighting between the city and the Athens International Airport is due to the difficult topography of the Ymittos mountains.

At the same time, small dark spots in the city's central area surround some of the most important ancient monuments of the 5th century BC, such as the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the temple of Olympian Zeus.

An Expedition 67 crew member took this photo on September 17, 2022.
