ATHENS: Anarchists attack police with Molotov cocktails in Syntagma, fighting in Omonia

Police were attacked with Molotov cocktails in front of Venizelos statue in Syntagma Square, Athens.

Molotov cocktails exploded in the forecourt of Parliament when a group of about 20 people emerged from the main mass of protesters and hurled the bottles over the monument of the Unknown Soldier.

Anarchists broke from the main march and attacked police with Molotov cocktails.

One Molotov bomb exploded in front of the statue of Venizelos, and the second, at the other entrance, in front of the statue of Trikoupis. Tension prevailed for several minutes, and the bulk of the demonstrators began to run away from Syntagma Square.

However, the march did not break up.

A little later, another group of anarchists threw Molotov cocktails at the police forces in Omonia.

It is reminded that the centre of Athens is closed for the three protests and marches taking place on Wednesday as part of the 24-hour strike of the Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY), the Athens Labor Center and the All-Workers Militant Front (PAME) for the one-year anniversary of the Tempi train tragedy which left 57 dead.

According to Proto Thema, 15,000 protesters were heading towards the offices of Hellenic Train, 2,000 protesters in Hautea and 3,500 in Klathmonos Square.

According to the report, police officers made four arrests on Akadimia and Bucharesti streets as Molotov cocktails were found in backpacks.

The protests of Labour Centres-Federations-Unions in Propylaia began with a minute's silence in memory of the dead of the tragedy in Tempi.

Soon after, the slogans "This crime will not be forgotten for all the dead we will be a voice" and "We will take revenge for you little one" shook the atmosphere at the strike rally, referencing the tens of students killed in the train tragedy.
