Routes Europe 2024 Awards: Athens Airport Named Best in Europe

By 2 weeks ago

Athens Airport has once again secured the coveted title of top airport in Europe for its exceptional marketing strategies and efforts to bolster the Athens market, as recognised by airlines' votes in the category of airports serving over 20 million passengers.

At this year's prestigious Routes Europe 2024 event, the largest annual gathering of the European air transport industry held in Aarhus, Denmark from April 22nd to 24th, Athens Airport emerged victorious yet again.

The Routes Awards stand out as a unique accolade, with airlines having sole ownership of the voting and decision-making process, thereby acknowledging excellence in aviation development on a global scale.

This year's achievement is particularly noteworthy given the formidable competition from other leading airports including Istanbul IGA, Rome Fiumicino, Brussels Airport, and Vienna Airport, all nominated in the same category as Athens Airport.

The airport's nomination this year showcased not only its impressive development achievements on a European scale but also highlighted its creative approach, focusing on strategic planning akin to a "big chessboard" within the broader international aviation sector.

In 2023, Athens Airport welcomed a total of 28.17 million passengers, marking a remarkable 24% increase compared to 2022 and a notable 10.2% rise compared to 2019. Furthermore, the airport's upward trajectory in passenger traffic continued into the first quarter of 2024, with a remarkable 16.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

Adding to its accolades, Athens International Airport expanded its network for the summer of 2024 by introducing 5 new destinations, 8 additional airlines, and 19 extra routes on existing connections.

Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director of Communications & Marketing at Athens International Airport, expressed her gratitude for the prestigious recognition, emphasising the significance of the award being bestowed by the airlines themselves, the airport's direct partners. She credited the airport's success to the unwavering support of its aviation marketing team and reiterated the commitment to further enhancing connectivity and promoting Athens as a prime destination.
