Greece - Hundreds of WWII German Bombs Unearthed at Athens’s Hellinikon

By 2 weeks ago

Authorities in Athens have uncovered 314 World War Two-era bombs during a large-scale urban development project at the former Elliniko airport complex.

At a press conference, Mayor Giannis Konstantatos of the Elliniko-Argyroupoli municipality revealed that the cache of German-made munitions was discovered buried two meters deep. The ordnance was found underneath a former social club, nursery schools, and sports facilities built for the 2004 Athens Olympics.

"Miraculously, no explosions or accidents have occurred," Konstantatos remarked. "It's astonishing how an entire airport and numerous municipal and civil aviation facilities could operate amidst such a minefield."
