Greece’s flag carrier, AEGEAN, commemorated its 25th anniversary this week, with its chairman, Eftichios Vassilakis, expressing optimism for the future.

Since its inception in 1999 with a fleet of two aircraft, AEGEAN has grown exponentially, employing approximately 3,700 individuals and offering an impressive portfolio of destinations. The airline currently operates 76 aircraft, providing 249 direct flights to 47 countries across 156 destinations.

2022 proved to be a successful year for AEGEAN, with a 3.1 million increase in available seat capacity, bringing the total to 18.5 million. The airline transported a remarkable 15.5 million passengers, marking a 26% growth compared to the previous year.

AEGEAN’s achievements extend beyond its flight operations. The company was successfully listed on the Athens Stock Exchange, became a member of the Star Alliance, acquired Olympic Air, and placed substantial orders for Airbus A320 neo aircraft. Additionally, it established Greece’s first modern Flight Simulator and Crew Training Center, housed in one of Europe’s first “green” hangars at Athens International Airport.

To enhance its long-haul capabilities, the airline has ordered four new Α321neo LR aircraft, enabling it to expand its reach to destinations in the Middle East, India, and Central Africa.

“Over the past 25 years, our industry has undergone significant transformations, but our unwavering commitment to innovation and competitiveness remains steadfast,” said Vassilakis. “As we embark on this next chapter, our focus will be on fostering a dynamic and innovative culture, while upholding our core values and contributing to Greece’s economic growth and global standing.”
