On Friday, a wildfire erupted near the open-pit mine field of Megalopoli in the southern Peloponnese region of Greece. Authorities quickly sprang into action, issuing emergency 112 alerts to nearby residents.

The first alert instructed people living in the village of Choremis to evacuate in the direction of Veligosti. A second alert then directed residents of Apiditsa and Chrousa to evacuate towards the town of Megalopoli.

Firefighting efforts are currently underway, with a team of 30 firefighters battling the blaze using nine fire engines. They are also receiving aerial support from two aircraft and one helicopter.

So far, the authorities have not reported any injuries or major damage, but the situation remains critical as they work to bring the wildfire under control. Residents in the affected areas have heeded the evacuation orders, prioritizing their safety as the firefighters continue their crucial work.

This sudden outbreak of a wildfire near the open-pit mine highlights the importance of vigilance and preparedness in the region, especially during the drier summer months when the risk of such incidents is heightened. The local community and emergency services are working together to mitigate the impact of this latest environmental challenge.
