Two new wildfires sparked alarm near Athens on Saturday afternoon, forcing authorities to scramble resources and issue evacuation orders amidst strong winds fueling the flames.

On Mount Parnitha, a major fire erupted near Katsimidi, northwest of the capital. Sixty firefighters with 15 vehicles, supported by five helicopters and two water bombers, are battling the blaze. Foot teams, volunteers, and hiking groups are also providing crucial assistance. Authorities issued emergency alerts to residents, urging them to prepare for potential evacuations. To aid firefighting efforts and ensure public safety, police have closed several roads in the area, including sections of Malakasa, Mercuriou, Ippokratous, Tyrtaiou, Tatoiou, Chlois, and the Varybobi bridge.

Meanwhile, in Aspropyrgos, western Attica, a second wildfire ignited, consuming low grassland, garbage, and dry vegetation. Thirty firefighters with two vehicles and a helicopter are working to contain the blaze, while a foot team provides additional support. At 2:30 p.m., an emergency alert instructed residents of New Zoi to evacuate towards Aspropyrgos. Police are diverting traffic at the junction of NATO and Aghia Sofia streets.
